I'd get a brass hammer for sure. They don't bounce around as they absorb the shock of the strike (if you are stamping) and they don't leave marks on your material....if you are going to make rings, I would also get a rawhide hammer (and beat the ever loving crap out of it on pavement to soften it and break it in before using it). What do you think you need a jewelry hammer for? Texture? If you want to make texture there are ways to do it without the fancy hammers. The only hammer I have is a ball peen hammer I use for a hammer texture. Silver dust makes my favorite texture.
